Common uses
- Exact age: full years, months, and days since a date of birth.
- Length of service: years of experience or contract duration.
- Countdowns: how many days until an event or deadline.
- Legal and contract periods: leases, warranties, or grace periods.
How it is calculated
The difference is given in full years, months, and days, using each month's actual number of days rather than an average, and also as total days and weeks for anyone who needs a single figure.
Example: length of service from 10 March 2019 to 29 September 2026
- Difference: 7 years, 6 months and 19 days.
- Total days: 2,760, i.e. 394 weeks, or about 7.56 years (2,760 ÷ 365.25).
- Working days with a Friday–Saturday weekend, both dates included: 1,973 (before public holidays).
If you need the period for an end-of-service award, use your country’s calculator, which works out the period and the award together: Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the first and last days both counted?
No. The calculator gives the number of days elapsed between the dates. To include both days in the count, add one day to the result.
How do I count working days between two dates?
Choose the weekly days off for your country or workplace and enter the number of public holidays in the period, if any. The calculator counts every day from the start date to the end date (both included), skips the weekly days off, then deducts the holidays. For example, Monday to Friday of the same week is 5 working days with a Saturday–Sunday weekend.
Can I use future dates?
Yes. Enter a future date as either date to see how long remains until it.
How do I find the date after a number of days?
Use our add days to a date calculator, which also works in working days, weeks and months.
Does it handle leap years?
Yes. It counts on the real calendar day by day, so 29 February in leap years is included in the total.
How do I turn the period into decimal years?
Divide the total days by 365.25. For example 2,760 days ÷ 365.25 ≈ 7.56 years — the form some salary and gratuity calculations need.
