Why are Hijri months 29 or 30 days?

Hijri months are lunar, starting with the new crescent; the lunar cycle is about 29.5 days, so a month has 29 or 30 days and a Hijri year 354 or 355, about 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year. That is why Ramadan and the Eids come about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Umm al-Qura and moon sighting?

Umm al-Qura is calculated in advance using astronomical criteria adopted in Saudi Arabia and published years ahead. In other countries the start of some months is set by actually sighting the crescent or by their own calculations, which can create a one-day difference.

When is Ramadan 1448?

According to Umm al-Qura, Ramadan 1448 begins on Monday 8 February 2027 and Eid al-Fitr falls on Tuesday 9 March 2027. See the countdown on our Ramadan countdown.
