How we count
- Words: any run of letters or digits separated by spaces; works for English, Arabic and mixed text.
- Characters: every letter, digit, symbol and space; the second figure excludes spaces and line breaks.
- Sentences: up to a full stop, question mark (? or ؟), exclamation mark or the end of a line.
- Paragraphs: blocks of text separated by a blank line.
Common limits
- X (Twitter) post: 280 characters on a standard account.
- Google title: about 60 characters to show in full.
- Google description: about 150–160 characters.
- Abstracts: usually 150–300 words, depending on the guidelines.
How long does 1,000 words take?
The counter estimates reading at about 230 words a minute for English (180 for Arabic) and speaking aloud at about 130 words a minute:
| Words | Reading (English) | Speech |
|---|---|---|
| 500 | about 2 min | about 4 min |
| 1,000 | about 4 min | about 8 min |
| 1,500 | about 7 min | about 12 min |
| 3,000 | about 13 min | about 23 min |
So a 5-minute talk needs about 600–650 words. These are averages; everyone reads and speaks at a different pace.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. Everything is counted inside your browser; the text is never sent anywhere, and even the “Share result” button shares only the numbers, not your text.
Why is the count slightly different from Word?
Programs treat symbols, numbers and dashes slightly differently; the difference is usually a word or two in long texts.
Does it count Arabic and mixed text?
Yes: Arabic, English and mixed text, including numbers. Reading time uses the main language of the text.
How many words are on a page?
Roughly 250 words on an A4 page double-spaced in 12-point type, and about 450–500 single-spaced. It varies with the font and margins, so counting the words themselves is safer.
Can it count a Word or PDF file?
Copy the text from the file and paste it into the box; it is counted instantly and never leaves your device.
